SOPA and You
I’m not going to bother going into a big song and dance about SOPA. It’s all over the Internet, so you can go just about anywhere to learn about it (except Wikipedia), and why you probably don’t want the bill passing. But I do feel the need to repost my link to my comments regarding Anthrax frontman Scott Ian, and his concept that if you pirate songs off the Internet, you should...

Scott Ian: Steal Songs, Lose Your Internet
Scott Ian, riff-ologist of Anthrax, recently conducted an interview and stated that people stealing music off the Internet is stealing, and that if you do so, you should lose your Internet privileges. While Ian has a point, he’s getting all Lars Ulrich/Napster on us, and is missing some bigger pieces of the puzzle. In my opinion he is incorrect when he states that “back in the...

R.E.M. Calls it Quits
At least now we can pretend we know why R.E.M. decided not to tour behind the release of Collapse Into Now. Sad day indeed, but who knows what the future will bring. All these bands seem to regroup eventually.

The Sword Live at the Worcester Palladium,...
I’ve already sung the praises of The Sword’s Warp Riders album here, but seeing them live is an entire other level of awesome. I was fortunate enough to get myself right up front, as you can see by my photo above, but judging by the crowd’s reaction, they didn’t disappoint no matter where one stood. The Sword’s set was abbreviated due to them not being the...

Hello Cleveland, Or, More Rush News to Shake a...
Because it wouldn’t be the era of modern day Rush without a concert oriented product being released every second, Rush recently unveiled details regarding two live products to be released this year. One is a DVD and Blu-ray entitled Time Machine 2011: Live In Cleveland, to be released on November 8th. Also on that day will be the twofer CD soundtrack...

The Sword Live Tonight in MA
I’ll be there, so come on out and feel the r0ck of some damn fine musicians. The Sword will not disappoint. Oh yeah, I guess this other band named Kyuss Lives(!), or something, is also playing. Apparently they like U2’s The Joshua Tree.

Three Nevermind Deluxe Tracks Now Available for...
Some radio station I’ve never heard of has made available, via streaming, three unreleased Nevermind era songs off of the deluxe edition slated to hit the streets next Tuesday. The real gems will probably be on the freakishly expensive box set coming out in late October, but these three songs should tide y’all over until then.

Iced Earth Re-records and Releases "Dante's...
Iced Earth has re-recorded fan-favorite song, Burnt Offerings’ “Dante’s Inferno,” and released it for free via their website. Perhaps what’s most noteworthy about this is it’s the first time new vocalist, Stu Block, can be heard singing with the band. Learn more about the release from Block and IE frontman, Jon Schaffer, here, and read the original Facebook...

Short Takes: Everybody Loves Our Town
Today is the release day of Everybody Loves Our Town, an incredibly detailed oral history of the Seattle music scene in the late 80s and early 90s. It will probably come as no surprise to anyone who’s visited Band Chat over the last few months that I personally know the author of the book, Mark Yarm. Thus, I can say with authority that he has spent a flabbergasting amount of time...

Rolling Stone readers vote Miley Cyrus's take on... →
I have no strong love for Miley Cyrus, but I’m willing to go against the grain and say that if this is the worst cover of all time, people haven’t heard awfulness like, say, Korn’s “Another Brick In the Wall” (see Les Claypool’s Live Frogs Set 2 for Floyd done right) or Celine Dion’s “You Shook Me All Night Long” (there’s no words to...
